The dorsal stripe of this 3’ long garter snake is yellow, yellow-ochre, or orange. The lateral stripes are bluish, white, or yellow. The dorsal color is grayish-black to greenish-black. Belly is greenish- blue to greenish-yellow. Ovoviviparous. Neonates are more brightly patterned than the adults. Scales keeled. Found in or near water.
