Characteristics:
Adult at 30 to 45”. This robust garter snake is black to brown above, but has a broad prominent yellow dorsal stripe. Sides black with red spots. Top of the head is usually brown. The yellowish belly has black pigment at the edges. Neonates are equally variable but basically similar to adults. Ovoviviparous. Neonates are similar to adults.

Habitat and Diet:
Inhabits grasslands, meadows, sandy areas with rocks, wetlands, and edge situations. Prey consists primarily of worms and amphibians but may also include nestling birds and rodents.
