Characteristics:
Often referred to as the “ground rattler.” This is a small (18-28”) rattlesnake species. It may vary in color from tan to gray. The dark (usually black) dorsal and lateral markings are often in the form of short bars. An orange dorsal stripe may be present between the dark bars. Note the vertical pupils and infrared sensing pit between, but lower than, the nostril and eye. There are 9 large plates on the top of the head. The buzzing of the tiny rattle is barely audible. Ovoviviparous. Neonates like adults in appearance.

Habitat and Diet:
Swamp and marsh edges and other such areas are the preferred habitats. Prey items are small rodents, ground dwelling birds, amphibians, and lizards.
