Characteristics:
Long (to 5+ feet), slender, very alert, and very fast, this common snake may be red or pink to jet black, and with or without bands. If bands are present they are usually most visible anteriorly Belly pinkish, brightest posteriorly. It prefers open terrain with enough cover to hide in and may often be seen along roadsides. Capable of climbing, it will promptly do so if seeking prey or an avenue of escape. They often “periscope “when hunting. Oviparous. Hatchlings are dark with darker saddles.

Because of variability of color and pattern, there are no ironclad unique features. Compare with other whipsnake species and subspecies in AZ.
Habitat and Diet:
This snake prefers open terrain with enough cover to hide in and may often be seen along roadsides. Capable of climbing, it will promptly do so if seeking prey or an avenue of escape. Prey of this snake includes nestlings of small mammals, birds, and lizards.
