Characteristics:

Overall appearance is very variable. The ground color of this 30” long garter snake may be olive, gray, cinnamon, or tan. The dorsal stripe is often absent or only partially visible. Lateral stripes are usually most visible along their upper edge and obscure along their lower edge. Belly whitish anteriorly and dusky posteriorly. Ovoviviparous. Neonates are equally variable but similar to adults. Interstitial facial stripes present.

Habitat and Diet:

Meadows, marshes, swales, most common near water sources.This subspecies preys primarily on amphibians and worms.
