Characteristics:

This dark saddled 2 to 2 ½ foot long snake has a ground color that varies from tan to yellowish- or reddish brown with dark brown or black saddles. Although it is regularly seen it is both secretive and seemingly uncommon over its Texas range. It seems most active on or shortly after a rainy night when foraging for its preferred prey–frogs. Oviparous. Hatchlings look much like adults.

lliptical pupils and a ground color that varies from tan to yellowish- or reddish brown.

 

Habitat and Diet:

Desert scrub, usually near a water source where the snakes may find their amphibian prey. Primarily feeds on frogs.
